July 6: New Discoveries at Old Cahawba

Linda Derry, Historical Archaeologist and Site Director at Old Cahawba Archaeological Park, will discuss Cahawba, Alabama’s first capital city. Today, Cahawba is a ghost town full of relics, ruins, rare natural beauty, and ghost stories. Derry will discuss the town’s history and highlight new archaeological discoveries and natural wonders.

 

July 13: Trade with the Creek Indians

R.L. Lehmann is a retired military man who has taken up the demonstration of the history of the old Southwest. Lehmann has demonstrated at several universities in Alabama, plus at many historical sites and schools. He demonstrates as a Tennessee Militia 1st Sergeant, Trader with the Southeastern Indians and as a Frontiersman.

 

July 20: The History of Longleaf Pine Forests in Alabama

Senior Project Manager for the southeast regional office of Westervelt Ecological Services, John McGuire specializes in the restoration and management of upland pine forests, including prescribed burning, sustainable forestry practices, managing habitat for imperiled wildlife species and other issues. Prior to joining WES, McGuire ran the outreach program for the Longleaf Alliance, a grassroots forest conservation organization.

 

July 27: Rosenwald Schools: A Benchmark in the History of Black Education

Dorothy Walker of the Alabama Historic Commission will present a program on the history of the Rosenwald Schools in Alabama. Three Rosenwald Schools were located in Houston County; Walker will explain their significance in the history of black education.
